Woodlawn Lake/San Antonio
2023
Woodlawn Lake Recreational Center is a new building project that replaces the former Berta Almaguer Dance Studio Building. Named after Berta Almaguer, a dance instructor who taught for many years at the site, the new building is 10,000 square feet, doubling the size of the replaced structure.
The building consists of one large and two small dance studios with sprung floors, offices, and storage for the dance program. It also houses a divisible classroom space and a large lobby for the community during the day—and the dancers when dance classes are in session. The design takes its cues from the modernist style of the previous building, but with a higher, pitched metal roof with interlocking shed roofs and deep overhangs; clean, modern wall panels; and translucent Kalwall panels at the entry and clerestory.
The site design offers improved parking and add a new yoga/pilates patio that overlooks an adjacent casting pond.
