Established in 1963, the Wurstfest Association has had a profound impact on New Braunfels and the greater Central Texas community. In 2017, Douglas Architects was hired by the Association to provide comprehensive master planning services for the existing festival grounds located on the Comal River in historic Landa Park. DAI worked with stakeholders to identify key issues of concern and determine what operational issues needed modifications. In addition, DAI evaluated the limits of the existing grounds including all existing spaces and buildings as well as potential expansion into areas abutting the grounds.
The masterplan focused on improving the circulation path of the grounds, providing more variety of program experiences for guests, as well as utilization of recently acquired structures. In addition, special recognition was given to the unique natural setting of the property, specifically the Comal river bordering the east and west sides of the grounds and the Millpond located south of the grounds. The creation of a park-like setting with a perimeter “River Walk” style circulation path expands the guest experience and better connects with the natural beauty of the site. DAI assisted Wurstfest with Phase 1 of the Masterplan, which includes the redevelopment of the existing LCRA Structures north of the Mill Pond. This expansion will be a major enhancement of the grounds providing a new park setting experience around the Mill Pond.
